The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced in a statement that aircraft attacked targets of this group in that coastal territory, populated by more than two million inhabitants, in the early hours of Saturday. In response, the Palestinian group fired more missiles.
According to The Times of Israel online daily, the barrage of missiles increased from 07:00 local time.
Tel Aviv authorities reported that the number of missiles launched by the Islamic Jihad since the beginning of hostilities on Friday was 160, most of which were intercepted by the batteries of the Iron Dome anti-missile system.
Meanwhile, the IDF and the police have arrested 20 people in the West Bank in recent hours, 19 of them suspected of belonging to this armed group.
The escalation began on Friday when the IDF attacked a number of targets in the Gaza Strip, killing 10 people and injuring 55, including one of the leaders of the Islamic Jihad.
