Over 18,200 Haitians were deported in July

Port-au-Prince, Aug 5 (Prensa Latina) A total of 18,232 Haitian immigrants were deported in July, most of them from the neighboring Dominican Republic, the Repatriates and Refugees Support Group (GARR) denounced on Saturday.

This figure included 52 pregnant women and 161 unaccompanied minors, this group wrote in a report.

Dominican authorities deported some 17,500 migrants, and this organization reported that they received complaints of thefts, verbal and physical attacks and violation of protocols of agreements signed by both countries. The rest were deported from Turkey, Cuba and the United States.

They also mourned the death of 22 people, many of whom were women, in shipwrecks off the coast of Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, and recalled the death of 11 women off the coast of Puerto Rico in May.

In the face of this scenario, the group urged authorities to take the necessary measures to restore peace in Haiti, which will make possible for the youth to aspire to a future in their country.

The deterioration of security has led more people to risk their lives to migrate to other countries as wars between armed gangs kill hundreds of people in vulnerable neighborhoods and displace tens of thousands.

A recent report by the UN office in Haiti denounced that some 200 people were killed from April to May as a result of clashes between gangs that fight for the control of the northern part of the capital.
