Dominican Republic with high number of human trafficking cases

Santo Domingo, Aug 8 (Prensa Latina) The Dominican Republic registered 383 cases of smuggling migrants and human trafficking in two and a half years, it was reported here today.

According to Listin Diario, in 2020, just when the country was declared in a state of emergency, because of Covid-19 104 files of that nature were processed, but they were raised to 162 in 2021, with an increase of 58.

Meanwhile, in the first semester of 2022, 117 cases were judicially processed and it must be added the recent operation carried out by the Public Ministry called Cattleya, which consisted of raids in the capital, Santo Domingo, and the province of La Altagracia, to dismantle networks dedicated to these crimes, under the modality of sexual exploitation.

In this operation, 80 women were rescued and 10 persons of Colombian and Venezuelan nationality will be charged of this crime.

The jurisdictions with the highest number of cases are La Altagracia (28), Dajabo (20), Montecristi and Santiago (both with 13), Puerto Plata (12), Santiago Rodriguez (11), María Trinidad Sanchez (nine), San Juan de la Maguana (eight) and Hato Mayor (six).
