Greek legislature to debate on espionage against opposition leader

Athens, aug 9 (Prensa Latina) The Council of Hellenes will debate from the next day 22 on a case of espionage against the opposition leader Nikos Androulakis, president of the Movement for Change party, it was revealed.

Nikos Androulakis, who is also leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement and member of the European Parliament, detected an attempt to install the Predator software on his cell phone so the unicameral legislative body brought forward its session. Giannis Oikonomou, spokesman for the Executive, stated that his government agreed to speed up the reopening of Parliament and hold plenary sessions to discuss the issue that week.

The decision comes in response to a request from main opposition leader Alexis Tsipras.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis denied any knowledge of the event, adding that he “would never have allowed it.”

He added that the National Intelligence Service underestimated the political dimension of these actions that “should not have happened”.

This case showed the “deficiencies” of the secret service, Mitsotakis, who promised a reform of that agency, said.

The Prime Minister’s office assumes political responsibility, although the handling of the matter has been incomplete,” he added, according to the local press.

The incident, which came to light weeks ago, involves the head of Greek intelligence and one of the prime minister’s advisors, according to investigations.
