At President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s morning press conference at the National Palace, the official took stock of yesterday’s terrible events which, he said, were unleashed after a very serious confrontation in the Cerezo 3 prison when rival groups attacked each other.
Mejia explained that at 13:27 local time yesterday, the shooting started inside the prison in module 2, initiated by a criminal group called Los Chapos, with a balance of 20 inmates injured, some by firearms and most of them by blows.
Control was reestablished in the center, but after this situation, members of the criminal group that initiated the actions took to the streets, created disturbances and aggressions against civil society with nine murders and the burning of commercial establishments and cars.
It was something that had never happened before because the criminals did not attack the population and we hope that this barbarity is not repeated, Mejías said.
He said that six members of the criminal group that participated in the aggressions were arrested, and two were killed by the joint actions of the Municipal Police, the Army and the National Guard.
The detainees and other members of the group have already been identified and their details have been handed over to the competent authorities, Mejías said and assured that order in Ciudad de Juárez has been reestablished.
