In the current summer period, more than 30,000 hectares of forests disappeared due to fires in several departments, such as Gironde, Hérault, Ardèche, Jura and Maine and Loire, with investigations opened in each one of them to identify the origin, often human.
According to BFM TV, citing sources familiar with the investigations, a not inconsiderable number of these destructive events are the responsibility of arsonists, with four people convicted and six remanded in custody so far this summer. At the end of July, a fireman arrested in the southern department of Hérault admitted to being the cause of several fires, citing his desire to see action and to get away from a complex family environment.
According to the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, nine out of 10 fires have a human origin, for which he warned that arsonists could face up to 30 years in prison if their responsibility is proven.
In total, this year at least 60,000 hectares of forest were razed by the flames, in a true economic and ecological drama.
