The MP´s Women’s Observatory statistical portal reported as many as 29,402 cases from January to July 30, 2022, being the Guatemala City as the province registering top number of violences against women.
As examples of the complaints, the psychological violence leads with 12,789 cases, followed by physical violence (8,137 cases) and economic violence (567 cases), in addition to 331 femicides.
The figures, however, do not fully express the real number of cases in the country, since they only include complaints reported by the victims.
In the same period, 205 men were arrested, so it reflected the slowness of the country´s judicial rulings, the Women’s Association Alas de Mariposa warned.
Although the figures showed a slight decrease in relation to those of 2021, it could be due to the fact that many decided not to denounce as they see that nothing happens, Linsleyd Tillit said, who laid stress on the high level of impunity in most cases.
According to Tillit, women looked for a forceful response and unfortunately did not find it as soon as possible, despite danger to themselves and their children, which is not too favorable for the victims.
