Experts to record Peru’s social history over several centuries

Lima, Aug 23 (Prensa Latina) Peruvian historians from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos are currently putting together catalogs of 12 notarial protocols, mostly from the 16th century, aimed at improving knowledge about the society, economy and politics of this capital city at that time.

According to the academic institution, researchers from the Faculty of Social Sciences and professionals from the General Archive of the Nation, executor of the materials, will contribute to the access to these historical texts, used in numerous studies.

The notarial documentation includes manuscripts from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, most of which have not yet been catalogued for review, and includes the names of well-known personalities in the South American nation such as Father José de Acosta and Antony Holguín.

The analysis of the archives will allow the establishment of a more comprehensive idea about those centuries, from letters of payment, rents, chaplaincies, wills, purchase and sale of land; as well as, documents on the acquisition of slaves and powers of attorney.
