Nearly 100 dead in Afghanistan due to heavy rains and floods

Kabul, Aug 24 (Prensa Latina) The heavy downpours in a wide area of Afghanistan until this Wednesday killed some 95 people, hundreds of others were injured and swept away thousands of homes in the country's several provinces in the last 10 days.

Agricultural land and crops were also devastated, while thousands of livestock perished, Ariana News reported.

The Meteorological Department warned of the possibility of relatively heavy rains with flooding in 21 Afghan provinces in the next 48 hours.

Deputy Disaster Management Minister Mawlawi Sharafuddin Muslim said that emergency food assistance has been dispatched to many flood-affected areas, and aid organizations have promised to deliver emergency assistance, but it may not be enough.

Afghanistan has recently been hit by a series of natural disasters and extreme weather events, including an earthquake in June that killed more than 1,000 people.
