U.S. election environment among the week’s highlights

Primarias-eeuu
Washington, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) The primaries in Florida, New York and Oklahoma prior to the November midterm elections and the student debt were major issues praised in the United States last week.

In Florida, Republican Ron DeSantis will seek a second four-year term in the southern state. Therefore, attention was focused on the Democratic race for governor, which was won by Charlie Crist, with 59.7% of the vote.

Crist held the office for which he is vying from 2007-2011 as a Republican, then he joined the Blue Party in 2012 and has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2017.

While Congresswoman Val Demings reached 84% of the vote and won her party’s nomination to challenge Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, who is seeking another term in the Upper House.

The results, especially in a special election in New York, gave the Democrats an indicator of how the political scene is moving before the coming elections.

On the other hand, redistricting resulted in a battleground for the Democratic nomination for New York’s 12th Congressional District, pitting two incumbent from 1992 in the House of Representatives, Jerry Nadler and Carolyn Maloney, against each other.

According to El Tiempo Latino, Nadler won with 55.4% of the vote, ahead of Maloney with 31%.

In Oklahoma, there was an election dispute among former President Donald Trump´s two supporters for the seat that will be vacated in February by Senator Jim Inhofe.

The Republican nomination was won by Congressman Markwayne Mullin, who defeated former Oklahoma House Speaker TW Shannon.

What happens in November will set the tone for Joe Biden’s governance in his remaining two years in the Oval Office. Another widely reflected news item was Biden’s announcement on August 24 to forgive part of the debt incurred by nearly 40 million Americans to pay for their college education.

The White House warned this would be the last extension, so as of January 2023 student loans will start to be paid again.

According to official estimates, if all those who are eligible claim the relief, 43 million federal student loan borrowers will benefit, of which 20 million will have that debt paid off in full.
