The shortage, due to the scarcity of rains, in turn derived from climate change, according to coinciding opinions of scientists, forced the authorities last July to prohibit the use of drinking water in the irrigation of green areas and the washing of vehicles, among other restrictions.
This summer Moroccans living in the south and east of the country saw thermometers rise to 48 and 49 degrees Celsius and the depletion of water in dams and reservoirs, reported the Green Carpet Association, an organization specializing in environmental issues.
Alarmed by the situation, the Moroccan government has drawn up a program that includes the construction between the current year and 2030 of a hundred large dams and a thousand small reservoirs, as well as the installation of 20 seawater desalination plants.
