Syria rejects US justifications for attacks

Bassam-Sabbagh-300x176
Damascus, Aug 30 (Prensa Latina) Syria rejected the justifications presented by the United States for the recent attacks perpetrated in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor.

This position was expressed by the permanent representative of Syria to the United Nations, Bassam al-Sabbagh, during a session of the Security Council on the political and humanitarian situation in Syria. He also described the US allegations in this regard as legal deception and political insolence.

The fact that the United States delegate invoked the provisions of article 51 of the Charter and called it the ‘right of legitimate defense’ represents ‘an excuse that is much worse than a sin,’ the diplomat said.

He explained that the Pentagon forces are illegally present in Syrian territory, without the request or approval of the State.

Their presence represents a clear violation of the United Nations Charter, international law and relevant Security Council resolutions that emphasize respect for Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, the official said.

On the other hand, al-Sabbagh said that Syria is making great efforts in terms of consolidating national reconciliation, providing decent living conditions for its citizens, in addition to rehabilitating infrastructure and basic services, and rebuilding what was destroyed by terrorists.

“With our own efforts and thanks to the support of our allies and friends, we have managed to guarantee a dignified return to more than 2.4 million citizens to their places of permanent residence,” he revealed.

The delegate called for an end to the illegal foreign presence in the territory, an end to the repeated Israeli attacks and an immediate and unconditional stop to the policies of economic terrorism and collective punishment imposed by the United States and the European Union on the Syrian people.
