Senators of Mexico’s ruling party are at odds

Mexico City, Aug 31 (Prensa Latina) The parliamentary group of Mexico's ruling party, Morena, once again showed fractures at its controversial 9th Plenary, in which they warned of division within the organization President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador founded, La Jornada daily commented today.

The newspaper refers to a division that for some time has divided the parliamentary group in the Senate into two parts, which yesterday was more than evident during the meeting in which the majority of the invited officials, including the Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto López, and the members of the Security cabinet did not attend.

That source indicates that morenistas complained about the “disdain” of the officials and one party blamed the coordinator Ricardo Monreal. He adds that only Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard and the Secretary of the Economy, Tatiana Clouthier, attended.

Early on, at the beginning of the plenary session, Senator José Antonio Álvarez demanded that the head of the Interior cancel his attendance a day earlier. “Hopefully, that fact does not mean that the government of President López Obrador has distanced himself from the Morena group”, he said.

The newspaper describes that the annoyance grew when shortly after the party leader, Mario Delgado, announced he would not attend and turned into anger when, in the afternoon, Monreal notified them that the meeting with the Secretaries of Defense and Security, Luis Cresencio Sandoval and Rosa Icela Rodríguez, respectively, would not take place either.

He explained that the head of Security, who was about to arrive at the Xicoténcatl campus, after being in the plenary session of deputies and senators of the Labor Party, warned him that “the president had urgently sent for her to the National Palace and she could no longer join us.”

The debate rose in tone when Senator César Cravioto asked not to flagellate himself, but to be critical, since in his opinion the absence of the officials was not slight, “but it was a very clear political message.”

He referred to his statement that the Executive’s preferential initiative is not viable, because attaching the National Guard to the Secretary of National Defense will only be achieved with a constitutional reform.

Monreal replied with the unaccepted justification that it was an academic response. He stressed he is not given “abjection”, nor does he want to be an expression or appendage of the Executive, but rather an autonomous power, a counterweight, but apparently he did not convince.

Cravioto replied that being with the President is not being abject, “or kneeling before another power,” but rather supporting a project. “I have a political leader, who is López Obrador, and of course I am here to support him.”

Another issue that caused conflict was the election of the president of the Senate, says the newspaper. Consensus could not be reached among the four candidates and today, Wednesday, the bench will meet to try to reach an agreement, since the Senate is summoned to a session to elect the new board of directors.
