President Bukele highlights security in El Salvador

San Salvador, Sep 1 (Prensa Latina) Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele on Thursday highlighted the security achieved in the country in July and August as a result of the fight against gangs.

“July and August 2022 are the two safest months in our history,” the president wrote on his Twitter account, after the National Civil Police (PNC) published that no homicides have been reported in 21 days nationwide.

Authorities and politicians and local media attribute the reduction in criminal activity to the implementation of the general security plan, reinforced by the decree on the state of exception in March, which suspended four constitutional rights and allowed for the detention of more people.

The measure, approved by the Legislative Assembly of the Republic after nearly 90 deaths were reported in a weekend, was extended five times, although there are sectors that despite not denying its effectiveness, ask for its repeal, arguing that it favors human rights violations.

After the implementation of the exception regime, authorities have imprisoned more than 51,500 gang members or persons allegedly linked to them.
