Truckers in Paraguay to strike to maintain fuel prices

Truckers in Paraguay to strike to maintain fuel prices

Asunción, Sep 1 (Prensa Latina) Paraguayan truck drivers say they will go on strike if fuel prices are not lowered to what was agreed in July by the sector's unions and the Government, local media reported on Thursday.

In statements to Radio 1000, the president of the Tobatí Truckers Association, Dario Toñanez, recalled that the truckers denounced the alleged breach of the agreement in a protest note sent to Petroleos Paraguayos (Petropar), the state-owned fuel import and distribution company.

According to the document, Friday is the deadline for the organization to pronounce itself on the matter. If the claim is not satisfied, the drivers will start a strike next Monday as a pressure measure for the price readjustment.

“Apparently, the only way for the Government to listen to us is to go out and demonstrate, because they do not pay attention to the notes,” Toñanez insisted, according to the 1080 AM radio station.

The union leader explained that they are requesting a reduction of 1,500 guaranies (21 cents of a dollar at the official exchange rate) in the price of a liter of diesel and gasoline, in line with the downward trend in fuel prices at the international level.
