Chilean President promises to advance in a new constitutional process

Santiago, Sep 5 (Prensa Latina) Chilean President Gabriel Boric made a public commitment to push through, together with Congress and civil society, a new constitutional process, following the rejection on the Sunday referendum of the proposed draft constitution.

The Head of State will also carry out rounds of conversations to gather proposals from the different sectors that have committed themselves to follow this process.

In the Sunday’s plebiscite, the Rejection option won with 61.87 percent of the votes, against 38.13 of the Approval option.

According to the Electoral Service, 83 percent of the more than 15 million people who were eligible turned out to vote, an exceptional result.

The plebiscite took place under an atmosphere of great tranquility, without incidents and, despite the large turnout at the polling stations, the voting process was very fast and there were no crowds in the precincts.

Congresswoman Karol Carriola, coordinator of the Approve command post, thanked the efforts made by all those who worked for this initiative and called for calm and to be proud of their efforts.

She pointed out that the 1980 Constitution, drafted during the military dictatorship, does not unite nor it represents the country, and reiterated the decision to clear the road that will lead to another fundamental law.

President Boric said that not all the people were pleased with the project drafted by the constitutional convention and therefore rejected it.

This demands our institutions and political players to keep working, talking and kindly respecting until they come up with a proposal that represents us all, that gives confidence and unites us as a country, he said.
