Spanish President defends contingency plans

pedro-sanchez
Madrid, Sep 5 (Prensa Latina) The President of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, today defended the contingency plans implemented in the country with a view to alleviating the international economic and energy crisis.

In particular, he highlighted the so-called Iberian exception, which grants privileges to Portugal and Spain in energy, which “has made it possible to save Spanish consumers two billion euros”.

“If we didn’t have that intervention in the energy market, for which the Government of Spain fought, citizens would be paying three times more today,” he said.

In an act at the Palacio de la Moncloa, where he inaugurated the political course for this last stretch of 2022, Sánchez explained the projections of the Executive to fifty invited citizens.

The visitors, who had written to Sánchez to convey their concerns and reflections, heard the announcement that tomorrow in the Council of Ministers the right to unemployment benefit will be approved for domestic workers.

With this measure we put an end to an unacceptable injustice, we are consistent with the Government’s commitment to recognize labor rights and dignity to different groups that have been neglected for many years and we assume as our own a mandate from the International Labor Organization, he pointed out.

The head of the Government took advantage of the occasion to review fuel subsidies, free commuter and medium-distance transport, or the adoption of measures aimed at sectors under strong pressure, such as agriculture and livestock or SMEs with intensive use of gas, among other measures of general benefit.

He stated that in the face of the uncertainty generated by the political, economic and social context due to the conflict in Ukraine, “we have plenty of reasons not to fall into fear, mistrust or discouragement.”

“The fundamentals of our economy are solid.” Faced with this kind of prophets of catastrophe and prophecies (…) the data tells us that the Spanish economy has strengths that should not be underestimated. And Spain is going to grow this year at a faster rate than the European Union,” he remarked.
