United Nations warns of food crisis in Somalia

Mogadishu, Sep 6 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations warned about a growing food crisis in Somalia, as a result of drought and rising world prices.

Part of the country will be hit by severe famine between October and December as rainfall decreases and food prices rise due to the conflict in Ukraine, UN Humanitarian Assistance Chief Martin Griffiths said.

During a press conference in this capital, he commented that the Horn of Africa is experiencing its worst drought in 40 years and famine is on the doorstep.

In this context, it is estimated that the crisis will affect parts of south-central Somalia and will be more severe than those recorded in 2010 and 2011, as a result of four dry seasons and decades of conflict.

This is worrying because the 2011 famine killed more than 250,000 people, most of them children. And it could be worse, as the territory is heading for a fifth consecutive season with no rainfall, according to climate experts.

According to the International Rescue Committee (IRC), the conflict is already underway.

“People are already dying. During the 2011 crisis, half of all deaths occurred before famine was declared,” IRC Director David Miliband said
