Panama registers increase in dengue cases

Panama City, Sep 12 (Prensa Latina ) Panamanian health authorities confirmed that between August 28 and September 3 they registered 4,887 cases of dengue fever, a figure higher than those of the same period in 2021.

According to the Ministry of Health (Minsa) report, of this total, 4,369 are patients without warning signs, 506 are alarm cases and there are 12 serious cases; they also registered two deaths, one in the capital city and the other in the province of West Panama.

The statistics show an increase in relation to the cases reported last year, when 2,149 patients were identified nationwide.

The national head of the Department of Epidemiology of the Minsa, Lourdes Moreno, said that in addition to the effort in health promotion and the work of the vector control team, the most important thing is that each person checks their environment: home, school or work.

In 11 out of 15 regions of Panama, serotypes such as Devn1 and Devn2 have been detected, especially in metropolitan Panama, Los Santos, Darien, North Panama, West Panama, San Miguelito, Chiriqui, Guna Yala, East Panama, Herrera and Cocle.

Moreno warned that there are regions with the circulation of both dengue serotypes identified, which could cause an increase in serious cases.
