ILO advocates for wage equality between men and women

Geneva, Sep 17 (Prensa Latina) The International Labor Organization (ILO) said that wage transparency measures can help to expose wage differences between men and women and identify underlying causes.

In its latest report on the subject, it pointed out that in general, women earn 20% less than men worldwide.

For the ILO, while individual characteristics such as education, working time, occupational segregation, skills and experience explain part of the wage gap, the greatest responsibility lies with gender discrimination.

The new ILO study, Wage Transparency Legislation: Implications for Employers’ and Workers’ Organizations, concludes that wage transparency measures can help address the gender gap and reduce broader inequalities in the labor market.

It specified that such a mechanism can provide workers with the information and evidence they need to negotiate their wages and provide them with the means to challenge possible wage discrimination.
