Syria holds election for local government councils

Damascus, Sep 18 (Prensa Latina) The Syrians on Sunday began to elect their representatives in the local administrative councils, where 59,498 candidates are running for 19,086 seats.

According to the High Electoral Committee, 7,348 polling stations were opened, 1,200 more ballot boxes than in the 2018 election, and the goal is to guarantee that voters easily exercises their right to vote.

Speaking to the press after voting, the head of government, Hussein Arnous, said that this election is important because the local councils are the executive institutions of the government and have a great role in improving services.

In turn, Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mekdad considered that all the constitutional processes were carried out throughout the years of the war in Syria, and the Syrian people are determined to exercise their right and duty.

In Syria, there are 1,470 administrative units distributed in 14 provincial capitals, 158 municipalities, 572 localities and 726 towns.
