The official letter was signed by dozen progressive leaders including the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize winner Argentinean Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, former Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa and Colombian Senator Piedad Córdoba.

Published on the official website of Argentine political scientist Atilio Boron, the signatories assured Gomes he should not enter history as that of a man who, having fought for the good causes of his people and reached all-important results, makes a mistake and opens the doors to a process that sows death and destruction in his country.
