South Sudan and SADR decide to establish diplomatic relations

Algiers, Sep 21 (Prensa Latina) South Sudan and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) decided to establish diplomatic relations in line with the objectives and principles of the African Union, diplomatic sources said today.

According to a communiqué from the SADR Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both countries expressed their willingness to establish official ties the day before at a meeting held on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which is in session in New York.

The text indicated that the decision of both states, members of the African Union (AU), an organization comprising 55 countries, is in line with their history of struggle.

The fraternal meeting was attended by the South Sudanese vice-president, Hussein Abdelgabi Akol Agany, while the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Salem Uld Salek, and the representative of the Polisario Front to the United Nations, Sidi Mohamed Omar, were present for the Saharawi side.

The AU, which admitted SADR as a full member in August 1982, together with numerous countries and international bodies supports the right to self-determination of the Saharawi people, who have had part of their territories occupied by Morocco since 1975.
