Violence against Brazilian politicians on the rise

Brasília, Sep 21 (Prensa Latina) Brazil registered in the Q1 2022 a 26% growth in acts of violence against politicians compared to the same period of 2021, according to a research.

The Observatory of Political and Electoral Violence, a publication of the Electoral Research Group of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), indicated there were 214 cases of violence from January to June.

According to the study, threats were the most frequent violence against politicians, reporting 89 cases.

Assaults and batteries were other common types of attacks, with 42 cases. Homicide is rated third with 40 cases.

The survey also reported 27 attacks, 11 family homicides and two abductions.

Since early 2022, councilmen have been the ones suffering the most, victims of 95 acts of violence.

Men are the most affected victims, totaling 176 cases; meanwhile women amounted to 38. The most attacked parties in 2022 were Republican (18 times), Liberal (17), Social Democratic (17), Workers (17), Socialism and Liberty (14), Progressive (13), Union Brazil (12) and Brazilian Social Democracy (11).

Recently, Rosemary Segurado, political analyst and professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo, explained that threats are part of a larger strategy to spread fear nationwide.
