G5 Sahel plans new strategy after Mali’s exit

Niamey, Sep 23 (Prensa Latina) The defense ministers of the G-5 Sahel group discussed a new strategy after Mali's exit, at a meeting here, it was announced on Friday.

Representatives of the member countries of the joint force plan to design a new configuration to adopt tactics to fight armed insurgents in the common space, according to a communiqué.

‘The current formula does not meet our operational concerns,’ said General Gninguengar Mandjita, chief of staff of the Chadian Armed Forces, which holds the presidency of the G5 Sahel.

Meanwhile, Niger’s Defense Minister, Alkassoum Indatou, pointed out that the group is affected by ‘coherence and unity of action issues that have deteriorated since Mali’s exit.’

The situation is that despite the efforts made by the States with the support of partners, ‘the security situation remains worrying, particularly in the area of the three borders, in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, the press release warned.

The G5 Sahel is a joint military force that was made up of Niger, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Chad and Mali until May, and was created in 2014 to counteract the violence prevailing in the Sahel area, and is currently fighting extremist groups.
