Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan sign protocol to demarcate border

Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan sign protocol to demarcate border

Bishkek, Sep 26 (Prensa Latina) Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan signed a protocol that allows the demarcation of the common border to begin, an official statement reported on Monday.

The document was signed by Kamchibek Tashiyev, vice-president of the Kyrgyz cabinet of ministers; and by the president of the National Security Committee and Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, Abdulla Aripov, according to the Russian news agency Sputnik.

Relations between both republics of the former Soviet Union were strengthened in 2017 after nearly a decade of noticeable cooling.

That same year, the sides signed an intermediate agreement on the common border, according to which, for the first time in the history of both countries, approximately 85 percent of the dividing line between both Central Asian nations was demarcated.

Three years later, the parties agreed to speed up and complete border demarcation to comply with what was agreed in 2017.
