Turkish minister submits letter of resignation to president

Ankara, Sep 27 (Prensa Latina) Turkish Interior Minister Suleiman Soylu presented his resignation to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Milli Gazete newspaper reported in the capital.

According to the source, the Interior Minister announced his desire to leave his post during a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on September 26.

At the moment, it is not known how Erdogan reacted to his request.

The Turkish minister previously asked for his resignation following the imposition of a 48-hour curfew in the country in April 2020 as part of the fight against the spread of the coronavirus.

The publication notes, that after the announcement of the measure, videos appeared on social networks showing crowds of people in stores to buy groceries. On the other hand, the decision was harshly criticized by the main opposition movement, Republican People’s Party.

Soylu, 50, has been Turkiye’s interior minister since August 2016.

Between November 2015 and August 2016 he was in charge of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, and in September 2012 he joined the Justice and Development party led the Turkish ruler.
