President Díaz-Canel urges to learn lessons from Hurricane Ian

Havana, Sep 29 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Thursday urged to learn lessons from the nationwide impact of Hurricane Ian and to constantly update risk reduction and prevention plans ahead of natural disasters.

Díaz-Canel, who attended the Provincial Defense Council (CDP) meeting of the western province of Mayabeque, stressed that in view of flooding in several provincial sites it is critical to update such action programs.

On Twitter, the Cuban leader highly recommended prioritizing lines of work in the future, building more resistant dwellings in Batabanó municipality, as well as progressing in the regional sewage system project.

Plus, the Cuban president called for restoring roads with materials less vulnerable to sea water.

Díaz-Canel heaped praise on the way the province managed to work, where, in his opinion, local authorities took smart steps useful for other districts to use.

There are conditions here to overcome the current situation in a short time’, said the Cuban president, while warning about keeping a constant assessment regarding the epidemiological situation in Batabanó, due to the epidemics risks the flooding may bring about.

As many as 3,000 Mayabeque residents remain evacuated, and the greatest damage were caused by sea penetrations in the municipalities of Batabanó, Melena del Sur and San Nicolás.

At the meeting, the CDP President Yuniasky Crespo informed that it was necessary to evacuate over 12,000 people in the province, many of whom have already returned to their homes.
