Bolivian Gov’t responds to Santa Cruz town council

La Paz, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) The Bolivian Government on Saturday insisted on inviting Santa Cruz town council leaders for October 11 to talk about the Population and Housing Census, despite the ultimatum issued by the opponents from that rich state, an official source reported.

After the period of 21 days to adjust the census schedule and the threat of an indefinite strike proposed on Friday by Santa Cruz civic leader Romulo Calvo to a crowd that supported him, Vice Minister of Communication Gabriela Alcon reiterated that the invitation to talk is still open and called “not to destroy what we have built.”

“It has the same connotations of the town council of October 4, 2019; we are talking about prayers, ultimatums and speeches that have a purely political tinge,” Alcon said referring to a scenario similar to the one that led in November 2019 to the break of the constitutional order and the overthrow of the government of President Evo Morales.

She pointed out that the Santa Cruz elites are trying to lead this type of destabilization campaign with a politically tinged discourse and urged people not to destroy what they have built together.

In this sense, the Ministry of Planning and the National Institute of Statistics summoned the Santa Cruz authorities to a technical meeting slated for October 11, in order to discuss the proposal presented by the Gabriel Rene Moreno Autonomous University (UAGRM) to bring forward the census.

The Santa Cruz opponents demand the census to be held in 2023 and also set a period of 120 days between its completion and the delivery of the results in order to, among other goals, design a new electoral roll.

In this regard, Alcon described the proposed deadline as a “huge mistake” because “international organizations, like the UN and ECLAC have said that it is unfeasible, impossible; in fact, 12 months are needed to deliver all the results of the census.”
