El Salvador highlights increase of security

San Salvador, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) El Salvador's authorities begin today a new month striving to reach the figure of zero homicides and reaffirm what was achieved during September, authorities reported.

The number of days without victims among the population due to actions from gang groups continued on Friday, although four gang members were killed when they attacked police forces during an operation in a rural area in the sector of El Amate, in the department of San Miguel (east of the country), at 138 kilometers from the capital.

The deceased were members of the MS 13 mara, the main criminal organization that emerged in Los Angeles, United States.

According to the National Civil Police, July and August were the safest months in the country’s history, but now September has become the safest in 201 years of history.

The actions against these groups are part of the general security plan approved by the National Assembly, which is supported by the state of exception prevailing since March and which was extended for the sixth occasion until mid-October.
