Pablo Iglesias calls in Chile to democratize media power

Santiago de Chile, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) Former Spanish Vice President Pablo Iglesias advocated in Chile for democratizing media power, after recalling that in many countries the press is currently at the service of the interests of millionaires.

The political scientist and founder of the Podemos party participated in a forum on media and political conflict, organized by the University of Chile.

Now, in most countries there is a media system regulated by the market and I believe that the market cannot be identified with freedom because it is not true, he said.

In the case of Spain, for example, large economic groups, sometimes foreign, are the owners of 80 or 90 percent of what people read, hear or see.

These media, he said, far from being a sort of neutral actors, are basically large ideological apparatuses capable of organizing the topics of public discussion, and even of organizing them hierarchically and becoming the most important political actors.

The owners of a television channel and even a presenter have more power than any minister, and these media are not subject to any kind of democratic system of organization.

To Iglesias, it is necessary to establish at least one third of public media to guarantee a minimum plurality that meets the interests of society.
