Russia claims referendums complied with international regulations

Moscow, Oct 1 (prensa Latina) The Russian Foreign Ministry reported on Saturday that the referendums held in the republics of Donbas and the provinces of Kherson and Zaporozhye complied with international law regulations and principles.

The Russian Foreign Ministry published on its website on Saturday that this was claimed by the Russian Ambassador Vasili Nebenzia at a meeting of the UN Security Council.

The ambassador said that over a hundred international observers, who monitored the voting, also described the results as legitimate. He added that the agreements on the adherence of the new regions to the Russian Federation have been signed and there is no turning back.

Russia vetoed a draft resolution by the United States and Albania at the UN Security Council that does not recognize the results of the referendums that were held in the Donbas republics and the provinces of Kherson and Zaporozhye.

Ten countries voted in favor of the project and four nations abstained, including China and Brazil.

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the agreements on the adherence to Russia of the people´s republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, as well as the provinces of Kherson and Zaporozhye, controlled by Russian troops.

From September 23 to 27, the four territories held referendums to adhere to Russia, in which the “Yes” won by a landslide majority.

When calling to the plebiscites, these regions argued that the incorporation into Russia would protect them from “terrorist acts” by Ukraine and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which provides it with weapons to kill civilians.
