Over 190,000 Floridians still off the grid for eighth straight day

Washington, Oct 6 (Prensa Latina) More than 190,000 people in Florida are off the grid today eight days after the passage of Hurricane Ian across the United States, according to the PowerOutage.us portal.

According to official sources, the full power service recovery may take weeks, due to ravages caused by Category 4 Hurricane Ian.

The Florida Power & Light Communications Director David Reuter said it will take longer to restore power in the western counties of Florida. On Wednesday, President Joe Biden said it will take years to fully rebuild Florida, where the hurricane’s strong winds, rains and storm surges left people without homes and livelihoods.

In his tour to Fort Myers, Biden noted that such a “historic and unimaginable hurricane blew everything to pieces; you have to start from scratch, move again, and it’s going to take a long time, not weeks or months, to fix it.”

Joe Biden acknowledged anxiety, fear and concern of Floridians affected by Ian.

In this regard, the US president recalled the federal relief to Florida for 60 days, which will cover debris removal costs, food and water distribution, in addition to support for shelters.

“There is much to be done, rebuilding entire communities from the ground up,” he stated.

Deanne Criswell, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), pointed out that the recovery process will be too complicated for housing in the long term.
