In a press release, the Syrian Presidency informed that al-Jaafari took the constitutional oath before President Bashar Al-Assad for his new diplomatic post to replace Riad Haddad, former Syrian ambassador and general, who was at the head of the diplomatic mission in Russia for nearly five years.
Al-Jaafari was appointed deputy foreign minister in November 2020 after several years as Syria’s ambassador and delegate to the United Nations in New York.
According to local analysts and media, the assignment of a senior position in the Foreign Ministry as head of the diplomatic mission shows Syria’s interest in consolidating coordination and boosting relations with Russia.
