The event took place next to a tree planted by the Heroic Guerrilla in 1959 when he visited this country at the head of a Cuban diplomatic delegation.

The rally was attended by Sri Lankan Member of Parliament Vijitha Herath, who is also the Propaganda secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Party; the president of the Association of Sri Lankan Graduates in Cuba, K. A. D. C Rathnamudali, and Cuban Ambassador in Colombo Andres Gonzalez.

In their speeches, Socialist Youth Union leaders Eranga Gunasekara and Anjana Amarasinghe highlighted the life and work of the outstanding Latin American revolutionary.

A message sent especially for the occasion by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), which was delivered by the Cuban ambassador, was read during the event.
