Egyptian government guarantees wheat supply, despite global crisis

Cairo, Oct 11 (Prensa Latina) The Egyptian authorities announced that the country, the main importer of wheat in the world, has in its warehouses enough of this cereal to satisfy more than six months of consumption.

The Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Ali Al-Moselhy, assured that this North African nation also has a five-month stock of sugar and edible oil.

Recently, that Ministry revealed that the government bought more than four million tons of wheat from local farmers this season, amid efforts to boost production in the face of high food prices on the international market.

After the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, Cairo approved new incentives to farmers to increase the production of local wheat due to the rapid increase of its price in the world.

Given the importance of the issue, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi repeatedly called for maximizing agricultural productivity and improving food security to mitigate the impact of the global crisis on the sector.
