Both officials met on Friday alongside their respective delegations in Hermosillo, Sonora, and a press conference was held at the Government Palace very late at night which Lopez Obrador did not attend.
At it, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard very briefly summarized, and without details, what each member of the Mexican party had presented regarding clean energies, the emission of pollutant gases and collaboration between both countries in this regard.
For his part, Kerry acknowledged progress made by Mexico to achieve these goals. He considered what the country has done impressive and said that bilateral cooperation will be further strengthened.
However, none of the officials spoke about one of the main topics of this conference, the Sonora Renewable Energies Plan, and reporters did not ask any questions about it.
This plan is very important as it is a model that Mexico will adopt to spread the use of alternative energy across the country where conditions are favorable. It is a very long-term project and involves the United States as it will contribute to supplying populations near the border.
The most important thing is that it mainly considers the development of the lithium industry, a mining sector nationalized by the Lopez Obrador administration, which will be key in the automotive industry based on electricity, already underway, and Mexico will produce batteries, among other components.
