United Nations allocates funds to fight famine in Somalia

Mogadishu, Nov 5 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations allocated 17.4 million euros to Somalia to help people in need of food due to a prolonged drought.

The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Somalia, Adam Abdelmoula, stated that assistance is necessary since millions of human beings could die of starvation in local communities.

According to the UN official, more money is still needed to help more than seven million Somalis affected by shortages of food and drinking water.

Amid this complex situation, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs recently reported that in order to meet the current needs of the population, Somalia requires about 2.39 billion euros, of which donors have provided 47 percent.

In addition to a severe humanitarian crisis, Somalia is suffering the onslaught of violence, in the heat of armed clashes between the army and the extremist group Al-Shabab (The Youth, in Arabic), which controls large areas in the center and south of this country.

Several times, humanitarian organizations have accused this radical group of preventing assistance, such as food and other consumer goods, from reaching vulnerable populations living in areas controlled under their control.
