Guterres calls on the world to keep its climate promises

Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, Nov 8 (Prensa Latina) UN General Secretary, António Guterres, repeated his call to the world to keep promises on climate matters and support the countries most affected by it.

The 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) must adopt outcomes that prioritize the most vulnerable through bold long-term commitments, Guterres wrote on Twitter.

“I urge the international community to support Africa in mobilizing the necessary technical and financial resources to scale up transformative adaptation,” he wrote.

Guterres stressed that the transition to neutral emissions of polluting gases “must be fast, global, inclusive and fair.”

“The rich nations agreed to transfer 100 billion dollars a year to the less advanced ones, but that amount was never delivered, and a large part of what was granted was loans, a highly questionable issue at this event (…) We have a credibility problem,” Former Vice President of the United States Albert Gore admitted during his speech.

Guterres asserted that the world is on a highway to climate hell at full gas. “Our planet is rapidly approaching a tipping point that will make climate chaos irreversible,” he warned.

Faced with such a situation, he called for a historic pact between developed and emerging economies, which includes limiting the increase in temperature to 1.5 degrees, speeding up the delivery of funds from the former to the latter, and promoting energy transition.
