Report denounces deplorable health inequalities in France

Paris, Nov 8 (Prensa Latina) A report from the French Consumer's Protection Association denounced the health gap between different areas of the country when it comes to access to general practitioners, pediatricians, ophthalmologists, and gynecologists.

In particular, access to a general practitioner, ‘the cornerstone of the French healthcare system, is particularly difficult for no less than 15,3 million people in our country,’ a figure notably higher than that considered by the Ministry of Health, which in 2018 estimated between 3.7 and 7.4 million citizens in this situation, according to the report.

The research took into account the geographical distance when accessing a doctor (up to 45 minutes by car) and the fees charged (whether or not they exceed the rates covered by Social Security), in the latter case ‘if only doctors who do not charge additional fees are taken into account, the shortage of doctors increases dramatically,’ the inquiry pointed out.

The Association questioned the measures adopted by public authorities in the last 15 years, when it comes to favoring the appointment of physicians in less populated areas, and asked the Government for a policy that encourages these locations and the rates contemplated by Social Security.
