The FAO office here released the news on Twitter and recalled the agency’s support for various countries to reform laws, improve institutions and strengthen surveillance against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.
According to FAO, the objective of the treaty is to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing by preventing vessels involved in the activity from using ports to land their catches, which should curb the flow of illegal fishery to domestic and international markets.
The effective implementation of the pact can contribute in the long term to the conservation and sustainable use of living marine resources and their ecosystems, according to the UN agency.
About 100 States are so far committed to the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA).
