Government of Honduras to investigate eviction of Garífuna families

Tegucigalpa, Nov 9 (Prensa Latina) The Honduran government's human rights cabinet will begin an investigation into the eviction of Garífuna families by the police in Islas de la Bahía.

According to the Minister of Human Rights, Natalie Roque, what happened in Punta Gorda sector goes against the policy of non-repression that characterizes the government of President Xiomara Castro.

“One thing is the independence of powers and another is respect for human rights, especially for indigenous peoples who are protected by Convention 169 of the International Labor Organization, of which Honduras is a signatory,” Roque said.

The president of the country tweeted stating that she was not informed prior to the execution of the eviction. “The Garífuna demand justice for their ancestral lands. This should go to trial not to eviction that criminalizes rights. I demand immediate freedom and respect for human rights,” Castro wrote.

According to a government-affiliated TV station, the investigation commission is made up of representatives from the human rights, defense, security, social development departments, the attorney general’s office, and the property institute.

At a press conference held on Tuesday at the government house, Roque assured that they are carrying out precise instructions from the president “to investigate these facts and establish pertinent responsibilities.”
