The 60-year-old scholar had arrived in Chile with a student from the University of Warwick to work at the La Silla stellar observatory, in La Higuera commune.
Authorities, using different techniques and equipment such as drones, cameras and off-road vehicles, participated in his search in an extensive area around the observatory.
After an intense search by a multidisciplinary team of police officers, Coquimbo’s GOPE found the body of the missing astronomer, the institution reported and extended its condolences to his family and friends.
The scientist’s relatives are in Chile to closely follow the investigation into the case.
