East Asia Summit ends without a joint declaration

Phom Penh, Nov 13 (Prensa Latina) The East Asia Summit, held parallel to that of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Cambodia, ended on Sunday without a joint statement due to disagreements between Russia and the United States.

The 17th East Asia summit held in Cambodia was attended by ASEAN leaders with foreign partners such as the United States, China, Russia, India, Japan, Australia and the European Union, which came as a guest.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the press at the end of the working sessions that no collective decisions were taken on Sunday because the United States and its Western allies have insisted in using a totally unacceptable language about the situation in Ukraine.

Lavrov also spoke about the intervention of the United States and NATO in the Asia-Pacific region to promote formats that go against the inclusive structures under the umbrella of ASEAN.

The Russian foreign minister added that this meddling leads to militarization of this region in order to check China and Russia’s interests.

In this regard, Lavrov mentioned the attempts to involve New Zealand, Canada, Japan and the AUKUS alliance (Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States) in the West’s new defensive line.

Lavrov explained that Cambodia, as host and temporary leader of this Asian organization, will issue a separate statement outlining future cooperation guidelines.
