In an extensive opinion article published in Crhoy.com, Monge recalled that the term “Central America’s Switzerland” was a contribution of the Costa Rican and humanist from Cartagena, Mario Sancho.
Monge pointed out that Costa Rican society lives in a crisis of values, as never before, and many want to get rich or have money, by making the slightest efforts, they look for easy money from drug trafficking and illicit businesses.
Regarding the deterioration of the environment, he noted that there are more and more irreversible damages due to the construction of large urbanizations in Guanacaste and coastal areas, without adequate controls.
Monge stated that for more than 25 years Costa Rica has failed to reduce poverty from the 20-percent level and there are more than one million people in poverty and close to 100,000 in extreme poverty,
