These territories have completed 42 days or two incubation cycles of the virus without reporting new infections, while in Mubende and Kasanda, where the highest number of sick persons are currently concentrated, positive diagnoses are also decreasing.
Museveni said, in a televised press conference yesterday, that residents of Mubende largely complied with the quarantine, but those in Kasanda violated some rules, including one family who exhumed a relative who had died of the hemorrhagic virus for reburial.
That incident left a subsequent toll of 11 deaths due to infection, he said.
As part of the restrictions in force to contain the spread of Ebola, the President banned the movement of log trucks in and out of the two districts after it was detected that they were being used to smuggle people out of the quarantined areas.
He announced that authorities turned over the names of all contacts of confirmed cases to immigration services at the borders to prevent them from traveling and exporting the disease to other countries. ‘
The circulating virus is the Sudan strain, for which there is no proven vaccine, unlike the more common Zaire strain that spread during recent outbreaks in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.
Uganda has so far a total of 141 infected and 55 deaths, according to figures from the Health Ministry. The outbreak was declared in the country last September 20.
