The agreement establishing the world organization was approved in London, the United Kingdom, in 1945. and one year later, on November 16, it came into force with the supreme objective of achieving peace and promoting international cooperation in the fields of education, science, and culture.
Its programs include the Universal Copyright Convention (1952), the Man and the Biosphere Program (1971), the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972) and the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003).
