Uruguay prepares summit and handover of MERCOSUR presidency

Montevideo, Nov 18 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay will hand over the pro tempore presidency of MERCOSUR to Argentina in December, at a summit marked by political changes in the region that currently generate reactions.

Analysts here said that outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro might decide not to attend the MERCOSUR meeting.

They also point out that the legacy of that country will be different after Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva takes office in January 2023.

Lula’s victory in Brazil underlines the new times the continent is living in while the winds blow differently to that of the Government of President Luis Lacalle Pou.

For this reason, Senator Daniel Caggiani considers that the Uruguayan foreign policy must adjust to the new realities.

The question is whether the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) will take a more integrationist stance at a time when Lacalle Pou is promoting the signing of a free trade agreement between his country and China.

Sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told El Pais that Uruguay would maintain this position at the summit.
