China asks Uruguay for patience on free trade agreement

Montevideo, Nov 23 (Prensa Latina) China is emerging as Uruguay's first trading partner, but today has asked for patience, regarding the signing of a bilateral free trade agreement.

This was stated by the ambassador of China here, Wang Gang, after the signing of the protocol of phytosanitary requirements for the export of sorghum from Uruguay to his country.

The diplomat commented that after 10 months of negotiations they ended the joint feasibility study with a view to signing a trade agreement.

The Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, Fernando Mattos, praised the authorization for the sale of sorghum to the Chinese market, the world’s main importer.

Mattos said that the agreed protocol will allow the diversification of sorghum production because it is a product that can be grown in different areas of the country.

He added that the grain will be exported for animal and human consumption.

He also said that there are some 21 companies registered with interest to participate in the production and export of this product.
