Prosecutor Gabriella Viglione, in charge of this process, said in statements reported Wednesday by the newspaper La Repubblica, that among the accused are guards of that penitentiary as well as doctors, legal pedagogical officials and even directors of that prison.

They are charged for the continuous practice for years of physical and psychological violence behind bars, against Italian and foreign prisoners, with the purpose of instilling fear and so far about 20 complaints made between 2019 and 2022 were documented.

Two facilities of that campus, known as the smooth cell and the aquarium, were used to torture inmates, who received beatings, and were kept for an indefinite period of time in those places, naked in the dark, among other practices.

Among the facts, the one of a minor detained in this penitentiary center between July 24 and August 31 last, who was stripped, beaten and forced to take psychotropic drugs, stands out.

As part of the investigations, during the course of this week 36 raids were carried out in homes and searches were made in the lockers of the investigated persons, whose cell phones and computer equipment were seized, with the purpose of adding new evidence to the file, the source said.
